TrueCrypt is an instant data encryption application designed for instant use on files stored as virtual logical drives in files, creating virtual encrypted logical drives in real time on Microsoft 7 (NT 5, Vista and XP), Linyx and Mac OS X operating systems. TrueCrypt software enables encryption of hard disc partitions and removable storage information (Flash cards, discs). All data that is encrypted using TrueCrypt resides on its homonym volume which is completely protected with directory and file name encryption. As created TrueCrypt volumes function similarly to typical logical drives, working with them requires using standard tools which manage disk testing/defragmentation/file system optimization/management – unlike with TrueCrypt volumes which function differently from regular physical drives.

TrueCrypt creates an encrypted virtual disk:
